About this micro-credential

This micro-credential recognises the ability to apply advanced digitalisation strategies in the building and civil engineering sector, integrating digital technologies, data and connected systems across construction processes. It reflects competences in IT/OT convergence, Digital Enabling Technologies, cloud and edge computing, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, data management and cybersecurity.

It also validates the ability to analyse organisational digital maturity, identify and prioritise opportunities for transformation, select appropriate technologies, and contribute to the design and implementation of a digital transformation roadmap integrating data governance, risk management and organisational change.

Learning outcomes

  • Distinguish basic digitalisation from process-oriented digital transformation in building and civil engineering.
  • Explain and assess the role of IT/OT convergence in enabling connectivity, traceability and real-time decision-making.
  • Evaluate and select Digital Enabling Technologies according to specific construction processes, operational needs and expected improvements.
  • Apply cloud, edge, fog and mist computing approaches according to data-processing and connectivity requirements.
  • Explain the relationship between AI, Big Data and Data Science and identify relevant applications in building and civil works.
  • Manage the main stages of the construction data lifecycle and recognise appropriate approaches to data storage, analytics and governance.
  • Identify and address cybersecurity, data protection and digital risks associated with connected construction environments.
  • Conduct an initial digital diagnosis and prioritise areas for transformation according to their potential impact and implementation effort.
  • Develop a digital transformation roadmap integrating technology selection, implementation planning, data strategy, risk management and organisational change.

Competency standards

  • Digital transformation and IT/OT integration: Ability to distinguish basic digitalisation from digital transformation and integrate Information Technologies and Operational Technologies to improve connectivity, traceability and real-time decision-making in building and civil engineering environments.
  • Integration of Digital Enabling Technologies: Ability to evaluate and combine Digital Enabling Technologies—including BIM, IoT, digital twins, drones, AI, AR/VR, robotics and off-site manufacturing—to improve efficiency, precision, safety and sustainability throughout construction processes.
  • Cloud, edge and distributed digital infrastructures: Ability to understand and apply cloud, edge, fog and mist computing architectures to support connected construction environments, distributed data processing and operational decision-making.
  • AI, Big Data and data-driven decision-making: Ability to understand the relationship between Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Data Science and identify their applications for transforming project and operational data into actionable information.
  • Data governance and cybersecurity: Ability to manage the data lifecycle and apply appropriate data governance, storage, security, privacy and cybersecurity principles to protect critical construction information.
  • Digital transformation project planning and implementation: Ability to diagnose digital maturity, identify and prioritise digitalisation opportunities, select appropriate technologies and develop a transformation roadmap addressing implementation, risks, data governance, resources and organisational change.
