About this micro-credential

This micro-credential recognises the ability to understand and apply the foundations of digitalisation in the building and civil works sector. It reflects competences in identifying opportunities for digitalisation, understanding Industry 4.0 and cloud-based systems, and recognising the potential of Digital Enabling Technologies to improve productivity, efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability.

It also validates the ability to contribute to an initial digital transformation plan by analysing production processes, identifying stages suitable for digitalisation, selecting appropriate technologies and assessing their potential contribution to more circular and efficient business models.

Learning outcomes

  • Distinguish linear and circular economy models and compare their environmental implications in building and civil works.
  • Explain the basic principles of Industry 4.0 and the role of cyber-physical and connected systems in construction environments.
  • Explain the fundamentals of cloud computing and distinguish the basic roles of cloud, edge, fog and mist computing.
  • Identify Digital Enabling Technologies relevant to building and civil works and recognise their main sectoral applications.
  • Assess how digital technologies can contribute to productivity, efficiency, cost reduction, competitiveness and more sustainable production processes.
  • Analyse a company's operational processes to identify stages and activities suitable for digitalisation.
  • Select appropriate digital technologies according to identified operational needs and opportunities.
  • Contribute to the preparation of an initial digital transformation plan, including process sequencing, required resources, expected improvements and basic feasibility considerations.

Competency standards

  • Circular economy and digitalisation in construction: Ability to distinguish linear and circular economy models and understand how digitalisation can support more efficient, sustainable and circular processes in building and civil works.
  • Industry 4.0 and connected production systems: Ability to understand the basic principles of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including cyber-physical systems, IoT and the integration of physical and digital environments in construction and civil works.
  • Cloud and distributed computing fundamentals: Ability to understand the basic principles and functions of cloud computing and recognise the role of cloud, edge, fog and mist computing in connected construction environments.
  • Digital Enabling Technologies in building and civil works: Ability to identify relevant Digital Enabling Technologies—including IoT, AI, Big Data, 5G, robotics, blockchain, cybersecurity, XR and additive manufacturing—and recognise their potential applications and contribution to productivity, efficiency and competitiveness.
  • Initial digital transformation planning: Ability to analyse organisational and production processes, identify stages suitable for digitalisation, select appropriate technologies and contribute to the development and feasibility assessment of an initial digital transformation plan.
